The Spanish violinist and conductor (1863-1939) studied with Monasterio, Vieuxtemps and Joachim. He taught violin at the Madrid Conservatory, as well as the Royal College of Music in London. He was appointed conductor of the new Madrid Symphony in 1904. On a card he has drawn a staff and written 4 bars of a work he identifies as "Bolero". He has signed "E. He was professor at the newly formed Conservatory in St. Petersburg and became one of the most famous violin teachers in Russia and the rest of the world. At the age of 16 he went to Leipzig and made such a fine impression that Ferdinand David arranged the post of first cellist of the Gewandhaus Orchestra. In 1860 he went to Dresden, where he remained for more than 40 years. Among his many pupils were Fitzenhagen and Hugo Becker. He has written to "Esteemed Lady, It is with great pleasure that I shall be prepared to assist both your referrals with advice and deeds once they arrive in Dresden. I have no doubt that it will be advantageous for them, since this is my own art field." He boldly signs "F. Grützmacher" followed by the place and date. The great Austrian-born American violinist writes in this letter addressed to the Vice-President of the Columbia Trust Co., New York, he explains that "the drawing out of my balance" did not mean he was closing his account. He continues, "... I am just now deeply involved in charity work for my country, Austria, which involves a heavy strain on all my resources..." . He has signed "Fritz Kreisler." Although this letter does not have a musical content, it is interesting to see his devotion to his country in the aftermath of World War I. Kreisler letters are quite scarce. He was principal cellist with the Bremen Opera Orchestra, the Prague German Opera under Szell, and from 1936-44 was principal cellist of the Chicago Symphony. He left the CSO to devote himself to his solo career, and made his solo debut in America in January, 1945 with Toscanini and the NBC Symphony. The great Russian violinist (1908-1974) was a student of Stoliarsky, and made his debut at the age of 6. In 1927 he appeared as soloist in the Glazunov Concerto under the composerŐs direction. His name attracted universal attention in 1937 when he won first prize at the Ysaye Competition in Brussels. He made his first American appearances in 1955, winning enthusiastic acclaim. He was one of the most acclaimed violinists of the 20th century, often compared to Heifetz and Milstein. He is shown in a close up head and shoulders portrait, holding his violin. He composed a large quanity of very effective solo pieces, as well as a tutor for violin. He toured with Rubinstein, von Blow and Bottesini. The great Czech cellist (1843-1913) was a student of Goltermann at the Prague Conservatory. He was first cellist of the Vienna Court Orchestra from 1868-1873. From 1896 until his death in 1913 he taught at the Budapest Conservatory. He has drawn a staff and written six bars of an etude for cello alone, all double-stops and very difficult, and even included some fingerings. He has dated and very boldly signed "D. Popper". (7 3/4 10 inches, on a sheet of card stock, with a small portrait of Popper glued to the card at the bottom underneath the signature) Popper musical quotations are very scarce. $750.00

The great French violinist (1813-1890), was a pupil of Habeneck, and such an important teacher throughout his life that in the book "Celebrated Violinists", the author Ehrlich writes "It is worthy of note that at the last Birmingham Festival before his death, every violinist in the orchestra had been either a direct pupil of SaintonŐs or a pupil of a pupil." This quartet, the violinists and violist all pupils of Sevcik, started playing together in about 1902, and in about 1904, Sevcik said they could use his name. After World War I they started using the name Sevcik-Lhotsky, probably because they got tired of people asking why Sevcik wasnŐt in the quartet. On an album leaf, each one of the quartet members has drawn a staff and written several measures from the quartet repertoire, followed by their signature. The Italian-English violinist and composer (1857-1928) studied with Bianchi, Cavallini, Gamba and Sivori. He was a member of the London Trio, and a professor of violin at the Irish Royal Academy of Music. He was an early champion of the Brahms violin concerto, and wrote a cadenza for the work. He has written to Mr. Hill (of Hill and Sons) that "I have seen your brother Alfred who gave me your address and who has taken my Tourte bow to Hanwell to rehair it." He talks about going to Boulogne to stay with his family, and when he comes back he would like to bring his violin "and do some music, as in the good old time!!" Enclosed is a recital program from Dublin and typed copies of reviews from the concerts. Fine musical association. Uncommon. (4 1/2 x 7 inches, folds) $150.00 Sold!

The Belgian violinist (1812-1875) was a pupil of Wery at the Brussels Conservatoire. He was solo violinist in the Brussels orchestra, and in 1852 he became conductor of the orchestra at Gand. He composed 144 works for violin. He writes to an unnamed correspondant about his daughter (who became celebrated as an opera singer), that she is on the verge of finishing her studies and has arrived to sing at the Society of the Casino. His own works include an orchestra suite, 2 violin concertos, a string quartet, a violin sonata, etc. He is shown seated, holding his violin and bow, and has inscribed and signed "Albert Spalding" followed by the date. has also drawn a staff, wrtten a very high note and a very low note, with a
symbol for a glissando between them. A unique item, one of the

The great Italian violinist (1867-1955) was a student of Massart at the Paris Conservatory, where she took 1st prize in 1880. After marrying Count Franchi-Verney in 1889, she withdrew from the concert stage untill the autumn of 1895, when she set out on a successful European tourincluding Russia, where her accompanist and joint artist was Rachmaninoff. This lovely cabinet photo shows the violinist in a long dress holding her violin and bow. She has inscribed the verso to Francesco Tamagno, the great Italian tenor, and signed "Teresina Franchi-Verney della Valetta Tua" followed by the place and date.
